Description: The Surma tribe is around 35.000 people living in 200 villages located on a large territory in South eastern Ethiopia at the border of Sudan. Half nomadic, they live as cattle farmer and peasant. Their livestock is more than 250.000 cows. Men take care of the herd and women of farming (corn and sorghum). They practice scarification and beauty mutilation and are one of the last tribes in the world where the women wear large lip plates. The Ethiopian goverment set up 3 schools but no teacher knows Surma language. La tribu des Surma reprÈsente environ 35.000 personnes qui vivent dans environ 200 petits villages ou hameaux. Semi-nomades, ils sont Èleveurs et paysans. Leur cheptel compte prËs de 250.000 bovins. Les hommes s'occupent des troupeaux et les femmes de l'agriculture (maÔs et sorgho)Leur territoire, principalement en Ethiopie, jouxte la frontiËre avec le Soudan. Les femmes portent un plateau en terre cuite dans la lËvre infÈrieure. En1996 une piste praticable a ÈtÈ tracÈ sur leur territoire. Jusqu'alors il fallait des jours de marche pour y acceder. 3 Ècoles ont ÈtÈ crÈÈ sur leur territoire par le gouvernement Ethiopien, mais aucun instituteur ne parle la langue de la tribu.
